Quasi-isentropic loading and unloading, employing graded density impactors (GDIs) as flyers in gas gun-driven plate impact experiments, can provide novel and valuable insights into the equation of state and strength properties of the loaded material. However, the internal ballistic process may lead to spalling or debonding of the GDI due to the intricate interactions between stress waves and interfaces. In this study, the wave propagation in the GDI was analyzed using the multimaterial Lagrangian elastic-plastic model and elastic wave propagation theory. The impact of gradient direction, power-law constant p, and thickness of the first and last layers on the tensile stress was investigated. The outcomes reveal that the mechanism of generating tensile stress varies for two gradient directions. Moreover, adjusting the constant p and the layer thickness may decrease the maximum tensile stress by 74.1% (forward graded) and 95.8% (reverse graded), respectively. Van der Waals (vdW)-layered materials, such as graphite, exhibit unique mechanical properties owing to their structural and mechanical anisotropies. This study reports the development of a mechanical model that reproduces the characteristics of the nonlinear and reversible bending deformation of vdW-layered materials, while taking into account the microscopic mechanism of the discrete interlayer slips. The vdW-layered material was modeled as a stack of interacting discrete deformable layers (semi-discrete layer model), and the interlayer interaction was modeled using a cohesive zone model that reproduced the localized interlayer slip. Using the finite-element method, out-of-plane bending deformation analyses were performed on the cantilevers of the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and MoTe2, and the validity of the model was verified by comparing it with the experimental results. The model accurately reproduced the loading and unloading behaviors in the experiments for the submicron HOPG cantilevers or the large nonlinear and reversible deformation with a hysteresis loop. Furthermore, the model reproduced well the characteristics of the bending experiments for the micro-MoTe2 cantilevers, or the intermittent decrease in stiffness during the loading process and deformation restoration during the unloading process. These results demonstrated that the designed semi-discrete layer model can be universally applied to reproduce the bending deformation characteristics of a variety of vdW-layered materials and can be employed to effectively elucidate the underlying deformation mechanisms. Pre-proenkephalin 1 (Penk1) is a pro-neuropeptide that belongs to the typical opioid peptide's family, having analgesic properties. We previously found Penk1 to be the most downregulated gene in a whole gene profiling analysis performed in osteoblasts subjected to microgravity as a model of mechanical unloading. In this work, Penk1 downregulation was confirmed in the bones of two in vivo models of mechanical unloading: tail-suspended and botulinum toxin A (botox)-injected mice. Consistently, in the sera from healthy volunteers subjected to bed rest, we observed an inverse correlation between PENK1 and bed rest duration. These results prompted us to investigate a role for this factor in bone. Penk1 was highly expressed in mouse bone, but its global deletion failed to impact bone metabolism in vivo. Indeed, Penk1 knock out (Penk1−/−) mice did not show an overt bone phenotype compared to the WT littermates. Conversely, in vitro Penk1 gene expression progressively increased during osteoblast differentiation and its transient silencing in mature osteoblasts by siRNAs upregulated the transcription of the Sost1 gene encoding sclerostin, and decreased Wnt3a and Col1a1 mRNAs, suggesting an altered osteoblast activity due to an impairment of the Wnt pathway. In line with this, osteoblasts treated with the Penk1 encoded peptide, Met-enkephalin, showed an increase of Osx and Col1a1 mRNAs and enhanced nodule mineralization. Interestingly, primary osteoblasts isolated from Penk1−/− mice showed lower metabolic activity, ALP activity, and nodule mineralization, as well as a lower number of CFU-F compared to osteoblasts isolated from WT mice, suggesting that, unlike the transient inhibition, the chronic Penk1 deletion affects both osteoblast differentiation and activity. Taken together, these results highlight a role for Penk1 in the regulation of the response of the bone to mechanical unloading, potentially acting on osteoblast differentiation and activity in a cell-autonomous manner. The M w 6.8 Murghob earthquake is the third earthquake in an M w 6.4+ sequence occurring in the Pamir initiated by the 2015 Sarez M w 7.2 earthquake. It is of great significance to investigate their interactions and to assess future seismic hazards in the region. In this paper, we use Sentinel-1 radar interferometric data to retrieve coseismic deformation, invert for the slip distributions of the four events, and then investigate their interactions. The cumulative Coulomb failure stress changes (ΔCFS) suggest that the 2023 Murghob earthquake was promoted by the three prior earthquakes in the sequence. Pre-stress from historical earthquakes is a key factor in explaining the triggering mechanism of the two 2016 M w 6.4+ earthquakes. Stress loading and unloading effects on major faults in the region indicate that future attention should be paid in (1) the segment of the Sarez-Karakul fault north of the Kokuibel Valley, (2) the segment of the Sarez-Murghab thrust fault west of the Sarez-Karakul fault and (3) the east segments of the Pamir thrust fault system, all with a large positive ΔCFS. Vial breakage during or following freeze drying (lyophilization) is a well-known and documented phenomenon in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the underlying mechanism and probable root causes are not well characterized. Mostly, the phenomenon is attributed to the presence of crystallizing excipients, such as mannitol in the formulation, while other potential factors are often underestimated or not well studied. In this work we document a systematic multipronged approach to characterize and identify potential root cause(s) of vial breakage during lyophilization. Factors associated with formulation, product configuration, primary container and production process stress conditions were identified and their impact on vial breakage was studied in both lab and manufacturing scale conditions. Studies included: 1) strain gauge and lyophilization analysis for stress on glass vials with different formulation conditions and fill volumes, 2) manufacturing fill-finish process risk assessment (ex. loading and frictive force impact on the vials), and 3) glass vial design and ruggedness (ex. glass compression resistance or burst strength testing). Importantly, no single factor could be independently related to the extent of vial breakage observed during production. However, a combination of formulation, fill volume, and vial weakening processes encountered during at-scale production, such as vial handling, shelf loading and unloading, were identified to be the most probable root causes for the low levels of vial breakage observed. The work sheds light on an often-encountered problem in the pharmaceutical industry and the results presented in this paper argue against the simplistic root-cause explanations reported in literature. In this paper, the effects of static stresses on the blast‐induced crack in polymethyl methacrylate specimens with an empty hole were investigated by caustic system. The propagation behavior and re‐initiation process of blast‐induced crack under initial static stress and high stress unloading were investigated. The results show that when the direction of the empty hole is perpendicular to the static stress, the static stress reduces the length of the main crack. However, when the static stress is very high, the length of main cracks does not decrease. In addition, the static stress reduces the crack velocity and dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) and suppresses the increase of DSIFs and crack velocity due to reflected wave. The crack arrested under high stress unloading propagates again in the later stage. Moreover, the duration of high stress unloading lasts approximately 1 ms. In recent years, several empirical and semiempirical relationships have been proposed to predict the small-strain shear modulus of unsaturated fine-grained soils along different hydraulic and mechanical loadings paths. However, a major deficiency of these relationships is the absence of a coupled linkage between hydraulic and mechanical processes that occur in unsaturated conditions. Specifically, the void ratio and effective stress are considered uncoupled, and changes in soil volume are rarely considered when implementing soil water retention curves in these equations. This study aims to address these deficiencies by discussing the coupled effect of hydraulic and mechanical processes in unsaturated soils and presenting a semiempirical model to predict the small-strain shear modulus, Gmax , of unsaturated low plasticity soils subjected to volume and effective stress changes along different mechanical and hydraulic stress paths. Predictions from this model and three other recently proposed models in the literature are compared with experimental results obtained from a series of suction-controlled bender element tests on silty soil specimens to validate the proposed model. The comparison reveals that the model proposed in this study provides more consistent predictions of the small-strain shear modulus during hydraulic hysteresis, as well as different paths of loading and unloading. This paper re-evaluates the Edenville earth dam that failed in 2020 after a rapid rise in reservoir level caused by prolonged significant rainfall. The dam instability and possibility of static liquefaction–induced flow failure are assessed in the framework of critical state soil mechanics (CSSM). Both undrained loading and drained unloading stress paths are considered for flow liquefaction assessment. Using documented triaxial compression tests, the Norsand constitutive model is calibrated for finite-element numerical models. This study supplements the analyses conducted by an independent forensic team (IFT) in charge of failure investigation. The advances achieved by tailings dam practitioners are leveraged here to study flow liquefaction as recommended by the IFT. Multiple ways are employed to generate reasonable initial field stresses. Simulation of dam construction coupled with steady-state seepage analysis creates an appropriate starting condition for further flow liquefaction assessment. The numerical outputs confirm the result of the IFT's limit equilibrium analyses for an undrained boundary condition. Stress analyses with a drained boundary condition show that a major stress change with a constant-shear-drained (CSD) stress path develops below the dam crest due to a rising reservoir level. The results of our models with a CSD stress path and drained-to-undrained transition better explain the evolution of the Edenville dam failure. The construction of deep foundation pits that are adjacent to an operating subway tunnel can cause significant disturbance to the surrounding soil and tunnel structure. Assessing the stability of the soil in the security area of the tunnel is key to controlling the displacement of the tunnel structure. Assuming that the soil behind the wall is in the elastic stage of small deformation, the unloading stress distribution law of the soil on the excavation surface of the side wall is inversely calculated using the horizontal displacement curve of the retaining structure. Based on the analytical solutions for the horizontal displacement and surface settlement of the soil behind the wall proposed in this paper, the spatial distribution characteristics of the deformation transfer of the soil in the security area are obtained. Considering the interaction between the soil in the security area and the tunnel structure, by simplifying the soil in the security area to a Pasternak foundation model, the tunnel displacement that is caused by deformation transfer can be obtained. The correctness of the theoretical model is verified by comparing it with the measured data for the soil displacement behind the wall and the tunnel structure in project cases of foundation pit excavation. In order to study the temperature change law of a nitrogen pre-cooling LNG unloading pipeline, a three-dimensional numerical simulation of an LNG pipeline with a bellow expansion bend was conducted using Fluent software (2020 R2). This simulation involved progressively controlling the nitrogen injection temperature and flow rate. The results show that increasing the nitrogen flow rate can improve the pre-cooling rate and reduce the top–bottom temperature difference of the pipeline, but there is an optimal value. Under the same nitrogen injection velocity conditions, it was found that smaller pipe diameters result in smaller temperature differences between the top and bottom of the pipeline. However, due to the reduced cooling capacity of the nitrogen injection, this leads to a decrease in the pre-cooling rate. The top–bottom temperature difference of the pipeline is mainly related to the strength of the natural convection in the pipeline. The stronger the natural convection, the greater the temperature difference between the top and bottom. Gr and Gr/Re2 reflect the relative magnitude of the natural convection intensity and forced convection intensity in the pipe. The larger the Gr and Gr/Re2, the stronger the natural convection. Therefore, Gr and Gr/Re2 are positively correlated with the top–bottom temperature difference, and the variation trend of the top–bottom temperature difference can be judged by the values of Gr and Gr/Re2. Residual soils are found all around the world. Their behaviour is different from 'classic' soils due to the structure resulting from the geological formation processes, which can eventually undergo degradation under static and cyclic loads, with a decrease in both stiffness and strength. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the behaviour of weakly bonded residual soil in the face of loading and unloading cycles using field plate load tests. Preliminary field and laboratory tests were carried out to characterise the residual soil at the experimental site. Monotonic and cyclic plate load tests – with circular and square plates – were performed under three different load amplitudes. The results showed no shape effect of the loaded area for both monotonic and cyclic loading, considering the same loading pattern. Also, there is a threshold load, which indicates a yielding point and a change in soil behaviour and can be estimated from simple laboratory tests. The activation of fractures and faults associated with stress perturbations is frequently encountered in various engineering applications. Understanding the hydraulic response mechanisms governing fractures and faults activation is vital to mitigate the risk of seismicity induced by deep resource extraction. To characterize the fracture activation behavior and explore the hydraulic response mechanisms, laboratory experiments on fracture activation induced by fluid injection and unloading normal stress were conducted. The results demonstrate that fracture activation induced by fluid pressurization and unloading normal stress present quasi-dynamic sliding and dynamic slip, respectively. Due to the severe damage of fracture asperities under fluid injection, the 3D roughness index shows a decreasing trend with increase of normal stress, suggesting that the governing deformation mechanism of fracture activation exhibits a transition from dilation to slip. The fracture frictional instability characteristics were further discussed through fluid pressurization rate variations. Under the condition of unloading normal stress, the fracture activation is mainly controlled by the slip mechanism, and the magnitude of fracture deformation is larger than that of fluid injection. Compared with the heterogeneous stress perturbation caused by fluid injection, unloading normal stress triggers faster slip rates and is accompanied by greater energy release, indicating that the unloading-induced fracture activation is more efficient and also has a higher potential to induce seismic hazards for natural faults. The lift leveling mechanism provided in this paper is controlled by the special rope fastening. By using the lift leveling mode controlled by the rope fastening, the leveling mode of the lifting system can be changed to the braking stop of the drive system after the platform is lowered and placed on the bracket. The problem of anchorage precision and the vibration caused by elastic expansion of the rope during platform loading and unloading are effectively solved by using the supporting function of the piers. In the process of studying this problem, we simplified a heavy-duty elevator system to form a simplified model that can be used for simulation research. The device provided in this article provides a new solution for the leveling of the heavy-duty lifting system, which not only ensures the leveling accuracy of the lifting platform during loading and unloading, but also effectively reduces the impact during leveling, which has a beneficial guiding effect on this type of equipment. The ability of the median nerve (MN) to adapt in response to altered carpal tunnel conditions is important to mitigate compressive stress on the nerve. We assessed changes in MN deformation and position throughout the entire time course of hand force exertions. Fourteen right‐handed participants ramped up force from 0% to 50% of maximal voluntary force (MVF) before ramping force back down in three different hand force exertion tasks (pulp pinch, chuck pinch, power grip). Pinch and grip forces were measured with a digital dynamometer, which were time synchronized with transverse carpal tunnel images obtained via ultrasound. Ultrasound images were extracted in 10% increments between 0% and 50% MVF while ramping force up (loading phase) and down (unloading phase). MN deformation and position relative to the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon of the long finger were assessed in concert. During loading, the nerve became more circular while displacing dorsally and ulnarly. These changes primarily occurred at the beginning of the hand force exertions while ramping force up from 0% to 20%, with very little change between 20% and 50% MVF. Interestingly, deformation and position changes during loading were not completely reversed during unloading while ramping force down. These findings indicate an initial reorganization of carpal tunnel structures. Mirrored changes in nerve deformation and position may also reflect strain‐related characteristics of adjoining subsynovial connective tissue. Regardless, time‐varying changes in nerve deformation and position appear to be an important accommodative mechanism in the healthy carpal tunnel in response to gripping and pinching tasks. The existing constitutive models of shape memory alloy (SMA) cannot accurately describe the mechanical behavior in martensitic strengthening segment since their loading and unloading paths in strengthening segment completely overlap. This study proposes a multi-segment linear mathematical model for SMA, which realizes the separation of loading path and unloading path in strengthening segment. A four-story steel frame structure and corresponding braced structures with various SMA constitutive models are designed, and seismic control effects of SMA braces with these models are analyzed and compared through time history analysis. The results show that the sub-cycle unloading mode of SMA constitutive model affects the seismic mitigation capacity of SMA brace in a certain extent. The position of the inflection point of unloading path has very little influence on the structural control ability of SMA braces. The SMA brace using the SMA constitutive model with a single linear sub-cyclic unloading path has the minimal seismic response and the highest seismic reduction ratio. For most evaluation indexes, the seismic mitigation ability calculated by the proposed path separation constitutive model is in the middle of the results calculated by the existing models. SMA models without considering the mechanical behavior of strengthening segment may lead to an erroneous estimation of the energy consumption of SMA brace and the structural damage. The standard triaxial tests cease to be valid as material tests since the homogeneity of the granular mass is lost when localized failures such as shear bands occur requiring a different approach to interpreting and analyzing material responses at the meso scale from the macro behaviour. This study sheds light on the above issue by analyzing the standard triaxial tests of the granular specimens undergoing localized failure at different scales using DEM. For the first time, the behaviour of material inside and outside of the shear band as well as the entire sample are quantitatively quantified through DEM simulations. The results enable confirmation of various theoretical hypotheses and experimental observations on the localized failure in granular materials. For example, by quantifying the inter‐particle contact forces of materials inside and outside the shear band zone, it is confirmed that the material outside the localization band undergoes inelastic unloading beyond the bifurcation point, while those inside the localization band experience inelastic shearing to reach the critical state. Moreover, the analysis in this study suggests that if the volume of the localization zone can be precisely measured from the experiment, the mesoscale constitutive responses that truly represent the inelastic behaviour can be quantified. This gives rise to a more appropriate method to obtain inelastic constitutive responses of granular materials from specimens undergoing localized failure in triaxial tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Phloem sieve elements (PSE), the primary conduits collaborating with neighboring phloem pole pericycle (PPP) cells to facilitate unloading in Arabidopsis roots, undergo a series of developmental stages before achieving maturation and functionality. However, the mechanism that maintains the proper progression of these differentiation stages remains largely unknown.We identified a gain‐of‐function mutant altered phloem pole pericycle 1 Dominant (app1D), producing a truncated, nuclear‐localized active form of NAC with Transmembrane Motif 1‐like (NTL9). This mutation leads to ectopic expression of its downstream target CALLOSE SYNTHASE 8 (CalS8), thereby inducing callose accumulation, impeding SE differentiation, impairing phloem transport, and inhibiting root growth.The app1D phenotype could be reproduced by blocking the symplastic channels of cells within APP1 expression domain in wild‐type (WT) roots. The WT APP1 is primarily membrane‐tethered and dormant in the root meristem cells but entries into the nucleus in several cells in PPP near the unloading region, and this import is inhibited by blocking the symplastic intercellular transport in differentiating SE.Our results suggest a potential maintenance mechanism involving an APP1‐CalS8 module, which induces CalS8 expression and modulates symplastic communication, and the proper activation of this module is crucial for the successful differentiation of SE in the Arabidopsis root. During pipe installation, compacting soil at pipe sides causes an initial pipe deformation which is known as the ''peaking" effect. However, in conventional pipe design codes, only pipe deformation caused by vertical overburden is considered while the ''peaking" effect is ignored. In this study, a full-scale test was conducted on a Grade X52 steel pipe with a diameter of 600 mm to investigate the impacts of both soil compaction and vertical overburden on pipe deformation. Soil compaction and external load were found to elongate and shorten the vertical pipe diameter, respectively. The ''peaking" effect was observed during the installation procedure accompanied by the highest pipe stress measured at the pipe crown. Then, a two-dimensional finite element model was created and validated based on the calculated pipe stresses from the experimental study. A parametric study was performed thereafter to numerically study the impacts of soil water content, pipe wall thickness, compaction pressure, and lift thickness on pipe responses due to soil compaction and external load. An increase in the ''peaking" effect is observed with increasing soil water content and compaction pressure, while an increase in pipe wall thickness or lift thickness would cause a decrease in the ''peaking" effect. This work focuses on the mechanical response of cubic-diamond nanoparticles of several sizes when subjected to a planar indenter. Three sequential stages were considered, i.e., loading, unloading, and reloading. In the large anisotropic strain regime, standard structure detectors stop identifying atoms as having diamond structures, affecting the ability to detect dislocations. A machine learning-assisted structure detector, MultiSOM, is able to detect a significantly larger number of crystalline diamond atoms and also identify much larger dislocation densities. MultiSOM also detects a distorted diamond phase and directional amorphization, similar to what has been observed for other covalent solids at high strain. After unloading, there is a large elastic recovery and significant amorphization remains. It is remarkable that dislocation density increases during unloading, unlike what happens for most materials, where there are large reductions due to dislocation reactions and surface sinks. This "anomalous" behavior is likely associated with low dislocation mobility in diamond, but also with a large number of junctions, which increases with dislocation density and reduces even further dislocation mobility. The unloaded state includes a dense dislocation network that withstands high-temperature annealing. Analysis of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) during recovery is consistent with significant recovery of the crystalline diamond phase. DNA Damage Tolerance (DDT) mechanisms allow cells to bypass lesions in the DNA during replication. This allows the cells to progress normally through the cell cycle in the face of abnormalities in their DNA. PCNA, a homotrimeric sliding clamp complex, plays a central role in the coordination of various processes during DNA replication, including the choice of mechanism used during DNA damage bypass. Mono-or poly-ubiquitination of PCNA facilitates an error-prone or an error-free bypass mechanism, respectively. In contrast, SUMOylation recruits the Srs2 helicase, which prevents local homologous recombination. The Elg1 RFC-like complex plays an important role in unloading PCNA from the chromatin. We analyze the interaction of mutations that destabilize PCNA with mutations in the Elg1 clamp unloader and the Srs2 helicase. Our results suggest that, in addition to its role as a coordinator of bypass mechanisms, the very presence of PCNA on the chromatin prevents homologous recombination, even in the absence of the Srs2 helicase. Context. Transport of cattle can be stressful and may lead to increased body temperature. It is necessary to quantify the effect of transport on body temperature so that informed management decisions can be made. Aims. This study aimed to determine the effects of a 5.5 h, 430 km road transport journey on body temperature (TB) of feedlot steers. Methods. Body temperature was obtained at 30 min intervals. All cattle were weighed and randomly allocated to a truck pen prior to transport. Cattle were transported on a single B-double truck, with three upper-deck and three lower-deck compartments. At 0630 hours, cattle were walked from their pens (25 m), weighed and loaded onto the truck. Loading was completed by 1030 hours. Key results. During the weighing and loading process prior to transport, mean TB increased from 39.37 ± 0.11°C to 40.21 ± 0.11°C. Immediately following loading, mean TB increased. The TB of cattle on the upper deck was 40.96 ± 0.08°C and on the lower deck 40.89 ± 0.08°C (P = 0.6299). During the first 3 h of the journey, the TB of lower-deck cattle decreased by 1.14°C (P < 0.01), compared with a 0.83°C reduction in cattle on the upper deck. Over the duration of the journey, which took 1 h longer than expected, the mean TB of the cattle on the upper deck (40.47 ± 0.11°C) was greater (P < 0.0001) than that on the lower deck (40.04 ± 0.12°C). One hour after unloading at the abattoir, pooled TB was 40.26 ± 0.12°C. Minimum TB (38.87 ± 0.04°C) occurred at 10.5 h after unloading. Conclusions. The results from this study highlight that increases in TB were more associated with cattle handling and loading events, rather than transport, under these environmental conditions. Understanding the magnitude of this increase will help managers decide on pre- and post-transport management of cattle. Implications. Cattle handling and loading for transport may lead to an increase in TB, which can remain elevated for a number of hours. Recently, the parameter internal work (IW) has been introduced as change in oxygen uptake (VO2) between resting and unloading workload in cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). The proportional IW (PIW) was defined as IW divided by VO2 at peak exercise. A second option is to calculate the PIW based on the workload [PIW (Watt)] by considering the aerobic efficiency. The aim of our study was to investigate whether IW and PIW differ between patients with and without pulmonary hypertension and healthy controls. Our study population consisted of 580 patients and 354 healthy controls derived from the Study of Health in Pomerania. The PIW was slightly lower in patients (14.2%) than in healthy controls (14.9%; p = 0.030), but the PIW (Watt) was higher in patients (18.0%) than in the healthy controls (15.9%; p = 0.001). Such a difference was also observed, when considering only the submaximal workload up to the VAT (19.8% in patients and 15.1% in healthy controls; p < 0.001). Since the PIW (Watt) values were higher in patients with pulmonary hypertension, this marker may serve as a useful CPET parameter in clinical practice. In contrast to most of the currently used CPET parameters, the PIW does not require a maximal workload for the patient. Further studies are needed to validate the prognostic significance of the PIW. In the railway container yard, there are few mature intelligent lifting prevention solutions available for train flatbed loading and unloading operations due to the poor detection accuracy or speed of traditional detection methods. This paper designs a train Flatbed Twist Rail (F-TR) lock anti-lifting detection method based on an improved BP neural network. The system collects weight and laser distance measurement data from the four locks of the hoist, establishes a flatbed lifting detection model based on the BP neural network, and optimizes the model's performance by incorporating a momentum factor and adaptive learning rate during weight adjustment. In practical tests, this system demonstrates a high detection rate and fast detection speed, offering intelligent safety protection for automated rail mounted gantry in the railway container yard. Cycling has emerged as one of the most important green transport modes in recent years, with cities increasingly prioritizing cycling in their sustainable policy agenda. However, the associated traffic dynamics, especially the evolution of bicycle flow at bottlenecks, have not been extensively studied. In this study, real-world experiments were conducted to investigate the dynamics of bicycle flow at bottlenecks under various cycling demands generated by the cyclist unloading and loading processes. Upon the activation of the bottleneck, its capacity remained largely constant. For the same physical system, the bottleneck capacity of the cyclist loading process exceeded that of the unloading process, indicating the occurrence of capacity drop and hysteresis. Statistical analyses demonstrated that the capacity drop was attributable to the difference in speeds of the two processes for the same cycling demands after the bottleneck activation. These findings could potentially be explained by behavioral inertia. Further analysis revealed that, compared with the unloading process, the cyclist loading process was associated with higher cycling speeds owing to the higher overtaking rates. The outcomes of this study can advance our understanding of the physics of bicycle flow dynamics and provide valuable insights for transport planning professionals involved in facility planning and control of existing networks. One of the most delicate operations in the sugar beet harvesting process is removing the tops from the heads of the root crops without any mechanical damages. The aim of this study is to improve the design of the conveying and unloading system of the sugar beet topper machine. In this paper, a mathematical model of the motion of a cut beet tops particle M, along the conveying and unloading system, has been developed to support the evaluation of kinematic and design parameters, depending on the rotational speed of the thrower blade, the air flow speed, the required ejection speed of particle M, and the position of the trailer that moves alongside the harvester. It has been established that increasing the speed Va of the top particle M, which has left the end of the blade of the thrower, leads to an increase in the arc coordinate S(t) of its movement along the cylindrical section of the casing. Within the range of the speed change from 4 m·s–1 to 8 m·s–1, the value of the arc coordinate S(t) increases by 1.4 times during time t = 0.006 s. Detecting parcels accurately and efficiently has always been a challenging task when unloading from trucks onto conveyor belts because of the diverse and complex ways in which parcels are stacked. Conventional methods struggle to quickly and accurately classify the various shapes and surface patterns of unordered parcels. In this paper, we propose a parcel-picking surface detection method based on deep learning and image processing for the efficient unloading of diverse and unordered parcels. Our goal is to develop a systematic image processing algorithm that emphasises the boundaries of parcels regardless of their shape, pattern, or layout. The core of the algorithm is the utilisation of RGB-D technology for detecting the primary boundary lines regardless of obstacles such as adhesive labels, tapes, or parcel surface patterns. For cases where detecting the boundary lines is difficult owing to narrow gaps between parcels, we propose using deep learning-based boundary line detection through the You Only Look at Coefficients (YOLACT) model. Using image segmentation techniques, the algorithm efficiently predicts boundary lines, enabling the accurate detection of irregularly sized parcels with complex surface patterns. Furthermore, even for rotated parcels, we can extract their edges through complex mathematical operations using the depth values of the specified position, enabling the detection of the wider surfaces of the rotated parcels. Finally, we validate the accuracy and real-time performance of our proposed method through various case studies, achieving mAP (50) values of 93.8% and 90.8% for randomly sized and rotationally covered boxes with diverse colours and patterns, respectively. The article explores the use of left ventricular (LV) unloading devices in combination with extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) for patients with cardiac arrest. The authors present a meta-analysis of observational studies and find that using an LV unloading device may reduce mortality but also increase complications. However, more scientific evidence is needed to establish guidelines for the use of LV unloading devices in cardiac arrest. The article also discusses the challenges of conducting randomized clinical trials in this context and emphasizes the importance of well-trained teams and timely interventions. Ethical considerations and the impact on quality of life are also addressed. OBJECTIVES: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is the implementation of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) during refractory cardiac arrest. The role of left-ventricular (LV) unloading with Impella in addition to VA-ECMO ("ECMELLA") remains unclear during ECPR. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to characterize patients with ECPR receiving LV unloading and to compare in-hospital mortality between ECMELLA and VA-ECMO during ECPR. DATA SOURCES: Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and abstract websites of the three largest cardiology societies (American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and European Society of Cardiology). STUDY SELECTION: Observational studies with adult patients with refractory cardiac arrest receiving ECPR with ECMELLA or VA-ECMO until July 2023 according to the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analysis checklist. DATA EXTRACTION: Patient and treatment characteristics and in-hospital mortality from 13 study records at 32 hospitals with a total of 1014 ECPR patients. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CI were computed with the Mantel-Haenszel test using a random-effects model. DATA SYNTHESIS: Seven hundred sixty-two patients (75.1%) received VA-ECMO and 252 (24.9%) ECMELLA. Compared with VA-ECMO, the ECMELLA group was comprised of more patients with initial shockable electrocardiogram rhythms (58.6% vs. 49.3%), acute myocardial infarctions (79.7% vs. 51.5%), and percutaneous coronary interventions (79.0% vs. 47.5%). VA-ECMO alone was more frequently used in pulmonary embolism (9.5% vs. 0.7%). Age, rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and low-flow times were similar between both groups. ECMELLA support was associated with reduced odds of mortality (OR, 0.53 [95% CI, 0.30-0.91]) and higher odds of good neurologic outcome (OR, 2.22 [95% CI, 1.17-4.22]) compared with VA-ECMO support alone. ECMELLA therapy was associated with numerically increased but not significantly higher complication rates. Primary results remained robust in multiple sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: ECMELLA support was predominantly used in patients with acute myocardial infarction and VA-ECMO for pulmonary embolism. ECMELLA support during ECPR might be associated with improved survival and neurologic outcome despite higher complication rates. However, indications and frequency of ECMELLA support varied strongly between institutions. The natural attributes of perishable and vulnerable cold chain products make the cold chain have more risks than the general supply chain. The attribute characteristics and internal relations of various risks increase the complexity of risk analysis. The purpose of this paper is to study the horizontal and vertical assessment of various risk factors. The multi‐dimensional risk measurement model is used to integrate the assessment of multiple risk factors of human, machine, environment, and management, and the cold chain risk management is discussed from the perspective of risk factor classification. The root‐state risk identification (RSRI) method was used to identify potential risks. Based on the double standard filtering and multiple criteria, the filtering of irrelevant risks and screening of uncontrollable risks were evaluated, and the triangular fuzzy number method was used to quantitatively evaluate the controllable risk factors. A total of 223 potential risks, 18 important risks, and 6 key risks were identified, followed by inspection and quarantine reports, pesticide residues, improper loading and unloading operations, unqualified centralized environment, unqualified pre‐cooling technology of carriages, and unreasonable storage temperature. According to the analysis results, targeted control measures are proposed to better prevent risks and reduce the probability of cold chain accidents. The traditional risk assessment method can only assess the impact of a single risk factor on the system. This assessment method overcomes this limitation and provides a new perspective for cold chain risk management. The STEMI-DTU pilot study tested the early safety and practical feasibility of left ventricular (LV) unloading with a trans-valvular pump before reperfusion. In the intent-to-treat cohort, no difference was observed for microvascular obstruction (MVO) or infarct size (IS) normalized to either the area at risk (AAR) at 3–5 days or total LV mass (TLVM) at 3–5 days We now report a per protocol analysis of the STEMI-DTU pilot study. In STEMI-DTU STUDY 50 adult patients (25 in each arm) with anterior STEMI [sum of precordial ST-segment elevation (ΣSTE) ≥4 mm] requiring primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were enrolled. Only patients who met all inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in this analysis. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging 3–5 days after PCI quantified IS/AAR and IS/TLVM and MVO. Group differences were assessed using Student's t -tests and linear regression (SAS Version-9.4). Of the 50 patients enrolled, 2 died before CMR imaging. Of the remaining 48 patients those without CMR at 3–5 days (n = 8), without PCI of a culprit left anterior descending artery lesion (n = 2), with OHCA (n = 1) and with ΣSTE < 4 mm (n = 5) were removed from this analysis leaving 32/50 (64 %) patients meeting all inclusion and exclusion criteria (U-IR, n = 15; U-DR, n = 17) as per protocol. Despite longer symptom-to-balloon times in the U-DR arm (228 ± 80 vs 174 ± 59 min, p < 0.01), IS/AAR was significantly lower with 30 min of delay to reperfusion in the presence of active LV unloading (47 ± 16 % vs 60 ± 15 %, p = 0.02) and remained lower irrespective of the magnitude of precordial ΣSTE. MVO was not significantly different between groups (1.5 ± 2.8 % vs 3.5 ± 4.8 %, p = 0.15). Among patients who received LV unloading within 180 min of symptom onset, IS/AAR was significantly lower in the U-DR group. In this per-protocol analysis of the STEMI-DTU pilot study we observed that LV unloading for 30 min before reperfusion significantly reduced IS/AAR compared to LV unloading and immediate reperfusion, whereas in the ITT cohort no difference was observed between groups. The loading and unloading activities of container ships at the Tanjung Perak Port is imperative, as they can be carried out quickly and efficiently. These ships tend to have a high frequency of visits and possess the largest gross tonnage among ships used for the transportation of goods. The occurrence of an accident involving a container ship can have a detrimental effect on the seamless delivery of goods via sea transportation. Furthermore, the crew be adequately prepared in order to mitigate the risk. As evidenced by research on safety behaviour have not taken preparedness as a factor into consideration when addressing emergencies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of safety knowledge, motivation, and awareness on safety behaviour in dealing with emergencies on container ships in accordance with relevant regulations. A total of 180 ship crew members served as respondents and it analysed using SEM-PLS. The results showed that preparedness, including safety procedures, emergency training, and crew security culture is an important aspect in dealing with emergencies. Furthermore, this study obtained an R square value of 0.525 in the structural model, indicating that the independent variables have an influence on behaviour, and it was classified in the good category. Resilience is a functional attribute of shield tunnels to ensure continued serviceability. From the performance-based perspective, the concept of deformational resilience is proposed and defined as the ability to resist deformation development (robustness) and the ability to recover from pre-existing deformation (recoverability). This work aims to measure the deformational resilience of shield tunnel lining structure, targeting at its most vulnerable part—longitudinal joint. For this purpose, a series of full-scale tests are carried out to perform 1) the failure process to simulate external surcharge loads, 2) the recovery process to simulate the effects of unloading and tunnel bilateral soil grouting, and 3) the cyclic loading process to simulate incremental cycling loading and unloading conditions. The assessment of deformational resilience is based on joint opening from the tests and related structural energy analysis. The test results demonstrate that the capability of tunnel longitudinal joint to resist deformation deteriorates with increasing overload level, and the recovery efficiency of joint opening presents nonlinear degradation with the increase of pre-existing deformation. The deformational resilience of longitudinal joint revealed in this research can facilitate the selection of appropriate timing and optimal design of technical parameters related to recovery measures for over-deformed shield tunnels. The Latarjet procedure is an established surgical treatment for recurrent glenohumeral joint instability with glenoid bone loss. Intraoperatively, the conjoint tendon and its attachement on the coracoid bone graft is routed through a split in subscapularis where the graft is fixed to and augments the anteroinferior glenoid. The objective of this in vitro study was to quantify the influence of glenohumeral joint position and conjoint tendon force on the lines of action and moment arms of subscapularis muscle sub‐regions after Latarjet surgery. Eight fresh‐frozen, entire upper extremities were mounted onto a testing apparatus, and a cable‐pulley system was used to apply physiological muscle loading to the major shoulder muscles. The lines of action and moment arms of four subregions of subscapularis (superior, mid‐superior, mid‐inferior, and inferior) were quantified radiographically with the conjoint tendon unloaded and loaded while the shoulder was in (i) 0° abduction (ii) 90° abduction (iii) 90° abduction and full external rotation (ABER), and (iv) the apprehension position, defined as ABER with 30° horizontal extension. Conjoint tendon loading after Latarjet surgery significantly increased the inferior inclination of the lines of action of the mid‐inferior and inferior subregions of subscapularis in the scapular plane in ABER and apprehension positions (p < 0.001), as well as decreased the horizontal flexion moment arm of the inferior subscapularis (p = 0.040). Increased subscapularis inferior inclination may ultimately increase inferior joint shear potential, while smaller horizontal flexion leverage may reduce joint flexion capacity. The excavation and maintenance of buried natural gas pipelines can lead to deformation and stress redistribution of the pipelines and even cause secondary damage to the pipes with issues. To clarify the impact of excavation unloading on buried pipelines, this study established a finite element three-dimensional pipe-soil model, investigated the mechanical response of pipelines under layered excavation and evaluated various parameters impacting the response. The parameters analyzed include the diameter-thickness ratio of the pipe, excavation length and width, thickness of top covering soil, elastic modulus of soil, specific weight of soil and initial displacement of the pipeline. The study results showed that the pipeline bulges upwards during excavation unloading, the pipe top in the middle is under tension, and the bottom of the pipe is under compression. Therefore, the axial stress and vertical displacement both increase first and then decrease, and they are distributed symmetrically along the pipeline axis; excavating the initially compressed pipeline leads to high strain areas in the pipeline and even local buckling. The response to slope excavation is more pronounced than that to straight trench excavation; the additional response of the pipeline increases with the increase of diameter-thickness ratio, excavation width, thickness of pipe top covering soil and specific weight of soil, but it decreases with the increasing soil elastic modulus. The additional response is closely related to excavation length and the initial displacement. To control net sodium (Na+) uptake, Arabidopsis plants utilize the plasma membrane (PM) Na+/H+ antiporter SOS1 to achieve Na+ efflux at the root and Na+ loading into the xylem, and the channel-like HKT1;1 protein that mediates the reverse flux of Na+ unloading off the xylem. Together, these opposing transport systems govern the partition of Na+ within the plant yet they must be finely co-regulated to prevent a futile cycle of xylem loading and unloading. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis SOS3 protein acts as the molecular switch governing these Na+ fluxes by favoring the recruitment of SOS1 to the PM and its subsequent activation by the SOS2/SOS3 kinase complex under salt stress, while commanding HKT1;1 protein degradation upon acute sodic stress. SOS3 achieves this role by direct and SOS2-independent binding to previously unrecognized functional domains of SOS1 and HKT1;1. These results indicate that roots first retain moderate amounts of salts to facilitate osmoregulation, yet when sodicity exceeds a set point, SOS3-dependent HKT1;1 degradation switches the balance toward Na+ export out of the root. Thus, SOS3 functionally links and co-regulates the two major Na+ transport systems operating in vascular plants controlling plant tolerance to salinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because the urban tunnel is an essential knot of urban traffic and an easy blocking point in busy hours, upgrading the urban tunnel was necessary for the city after the tunnel being in service for a long time. However, to demolish the existing tunnel, some problems may be encountered, and these problems include occurrence of longitudinal cracks at the tunnel vault, increase of load due to infrastructure construction over the tunnel, unloading due to excavation of the rock over the tunnel, and uneven load due to asymmetric excavation or construction. To reinforce a cracked tunnel in Chongqing City, China, steel arches were installed to improve its bearing capacity, but some steel arches failed during the excavation of ground over the tunnel. Therefore, the scheme of "steel arch + shotcrete + tube column + transversal horizontal bracing" (hereinafter referred to as SASTCT) was proposed to ensure tunnel safety due to unloading and uneven load during the subsequent construction procedures. Numerical analysis indicated that the SASTCT measure can ensure the safety of the traffic and subsequent construction, which can provide some suggestions for similar tunnel upgrades in the future. The complex behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs), characterized by hysteresis and nonlinear dynamics, results in complex constitutive equations. To circumvent the complexity of solving these equations, a black box neural network (NN) has been employed in this research to model a rotary actuator actuated by an SMA wire. Considering the historical dependence of the pulley's rotational angle on the applied voltage, a recurrent neural network (RNN) is suitable for capturing past information. Specifically, a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is selected due to its ability to address issues encountered in standard recurrent networks. There are major drawbacks with modelling hysteresis with NNs that do not account for historical behavior. Traditional NNs, characterized by a one-to-one mapping, struggle to capture hysteresis loops wherein system behavior varies during loading and unloading cycles. Therefore, a single-tag data is used to determine the loading or unloading state, but tag signal causes discontinuity in network and omits various aspects of hysteresis in SMA, particularly within minor loops. In contrast, NNs incorporating past data to predict hysteresis behavior alleviate the need for tag data. However, such networks tend to have complex structures with a substantial number of neurons to effectively capture the inherent nonlinearity in SMAs. The long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network employed in this research, characterized by a simpler structure, achieves high accuracy in predicting hysteresis in SMAs without the need for tag data. In the proposed LSTM model, data related to the pulley's rotational angle and the wire's applied voltage from the current moment and the two previous moments serve as input. The data passes through a layer comprising three LSTM cells, and the output from the last LSTM cell is fed into a fully connected layer to predict the pulley's rotational angle for the next moment. Training data are obtained by applying voltage at various frequencies and formats to the SMA wire while simultaneously recording the pulley's angle with an encoder. Evaluation of the LSTM model is conducted in two configurations: online prediction (one-step ahead) and offline prediction (multistep ahead). In the online configuration where the model uses encoder data as angular inputs, the root mean square error (RMSE) of predictions for various input voltages is significantly low at about 0.1 degrees where the maximum rotational angle of pulley is 8 degrees. In the offline configuration when using the model's predictions as angular inputs instead of encoder data, the RMSE rises to 0.3 degrees. To provide a clear demonstration of the LSTM model's ability in this particular configuration, a comparison has been conducted between LSTM model and a rate-dependent Prandtl-Ishlinskii (RDPI) hysteresis model for predicting the pulley's angle. The LSTM model outperforms the RDPI model by 70% in terms of accuracy. The fracture of the surrounding rock in deep hard rock engineering is influenced by the stress path during excavation. Taking the stress path as the only variable, a true triaxial experimental system was used to study the loading–unloading stress path during excavation and the loading stress path with constant stress state after excavation, and combined with acoustic emission, 3D laser scanning and SEM to investigate the differential mechanisms of the two stress paths on the strength, energy storage and fracture of the rock. The results show that the strength, deformation and ultimate energy storage capacity of the rock under the loading−unloading stress path are greater than those under the loading stress path with constant stress state. Compared with the loading stress path with constant stress state, with the loading−unloading stress path, the rock fractures are more fragmented, the failure angles are slightly smaller, and the development of shear cracks is delayed, occurring closer to rock failure. This is due to the influence of the true triaxial stress state on rock fracture expansion. The changing direction and location of rock fracture expansion under the loading−unloading stress path inhibits crack penetration, which in turn delays the development of shear cracks. The effect of the stress path is influenced by the rate of loading and unloading; the greater the rate of loading and unloading of the rock is, the greater the strength and ultimate energy storage of the rock. Finally, the evolution characteristics of the tensile and shear cracks formed in the rock under the loading−unloading stress paths during excavation provide new understanding for the prevention and control of deep engineering hazards. With growing freight operations throughout the world, there is a push for transportation systems to accommodate trucks during loading and unloading operations. Currently, many urban locations do not provide loading and unloading zones, which results in trucks parking in places that obstruct bicyclist's roadway infrastructure (e.g., bicycle lanes). To understand the implications of these truck operations, a bicycle simulation experiment was designed to evaluate the impact of commercial vehicle loading and unloading activities on safe and efficient bicycle operations in a shared urban roadway environment. A fully counterbalanced, partially randomized, factorial design was chosen to explore three independent variables: commercial vehicle loading zone (CVLZ) sizes with three levels (i.e., no CVLZ, Min CVLZ, and Max CVLZ), courier position with three levels (i.e., no courier, behind the truck, beside the truck), and with and without loading accessories. Bicyclist's physiological response and eye tracking were used as performance measures. Data were obtained from 48 participants, resulting in 864 observations in 18 experimental scenarios using linear mixed-effects models (LMM). Results from the LMMs suggest that loading zone size and courier position had the greatest effect on bicyclist's physiological responses. Bicyclists had approximately two peaks-per-minute higher when riding in the condition that included no CVLZ and courier on the side compared to the base conditions (i.e., Max CVLZ and no courier). Additionally, when the courier was beside the truck, bicyclist's eye fixation durations (sec) were one (s) greater than when the courier was located behind the truck, indicating that bicyclists were more alert as they passed by the courier. The presence of accessories had the lowest influence on both bicyclists' physiological response and eye tracking measures. These findings could support better roadway and CVLZ design guidelines, which will allow our urban street system to operate more efficiently, safely, and reliable for all users. In geotechnical engineering practice, studying the characteristics of rock electrical resistivity under different physical and mechanical environments is important for improving the accuracy of unfavorable geological condition detection. In this study, Dali marble and granite were subjected to cyclic loading and unloading at different peak pressures, and the electrical resistivity of the core samples was continuously monitored. The aim was to derive the electrical resistivity variation patterns of two rocks under cyclic loading and unloading. Then, the theoretical models of electrical resistivity for the two rocks were established through theoretical derivation, and the model equations were consistent with the experimental findings. Finally, a MATLAB program was used for nonlinear fitting of the unloading phase electrical resistivity variation patterns of the rocks to reveal the quantified pressure-electrical resistivity patterns of the two rocks with different lithologies. Based on this, well-performing rock pressure-electrical resistivity relationship models were developed with three parameters: pressure, water content and electrical resistivity. The experimental results can significantly improve the accuracy of stratigraphic state inversion and unfavorable body boundary identification by providing realistic electrical resistivity constraints for electrical resistivity tomography. In the process of mining, there are rocks affected by cyclic disturbances, which have significant effects on the mechanical properties of rocks. To understand the loading rate effect of rocks under different cyclic loading and unloading methods,this paper carries out constant lower Unit cyclic loading and unloading, variable lower Unit cyclic loading and unloading tests on sillimanite specimens with different loading rates, comparatively analyzes the deformation characteristics, the energy evolution law and the destructive characteristics of the specimens under the two cyclic loading and unloading methods with different loading rates. The test results show that the peak strength and residual deformation of the specimen have different acceleration rate effects, but the peak strength is improved compared with the conventional uniaxial compression test; WITH the increase of the loading rate, the input energy, elastic energy and dissipation energy of the specimen in all stages show an increasing trend, but with some differences in the form of manifestation; the destruction of the specimen and IS morphology show the acceleration rate effect, and the degree of destruction is intensified with the increase of the loading rate. The effect of complex triaxial unloading confining pressure conditions on the mechanical behaviour and fracture mechanism of sandstone is investigated. Constant deviatoric stress direct and cyclic unloading confining pressure tests are carried out under two initial damage states. Based on the evolution law of deformation parameters, the influence of the initial damage and unloading rate on the mechanical properties of sandstone samples is expounded. The mechanism of tensile fracture development caused by the unloading of the confining pressure is proposed, and the engineering disasters that may be induced by this mechanism are discussed. The results show that the cyclic unloading confining pressure tests can replace direct unloading pressure tests to study the evolution process of the mechanical parameters of samples. The unloading confining pressure test under low damage conditions is more conducive to the study of unloading confining pressure failure. The unloading confining pressure produces obvious radial expansion and tensile cracks in the sample. With decreasing confining pressure, the bulk modulus of the samples under the two damage conditions gradually decreases. Under low damage conditions, the dilatancy angle decreases first and then increases, while under high damage conditions, it gradually increases. The unloading rate does not affect tensile crack development but does affect compression‒shear crack development, resulting in different strain responses of the two damaged specimens. The generation mechanism of macroscopic tensile cracks is as follows: the residual stress generated by the unloading of the confining pressure causes random tensile microcracks to nucleate, and the increase in microcrack density provides power for its development. The airfoil cracks gradually bend in the direction of the first principal stress, and the microcracks develop directionally and interconnect with each other to form macroscopic axial tensile cracks. The unloading of confining pressure produces tensile cracks perpendicular to the unloading direction, which may induce rock bursts and landslide disasters. The research results provide an important scientific basis for underground rock engineering construction and slope engineering prevention. Truck hoisting detection constitutes a key focus in port security, for which no optimal resolution has been identified. To address the issues of high costs, susceptibility to weather conditions, and low accuracy in conventional methods for truck hoisting detection, a non-intrusive detection approach is proposed in this paper. The proposed approach utilizes a mathematical model and an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model. Electrical signals, including voltage and current, collected by Hall sensors are processed by the mathematical model, which augments their physical information. Subsequently, the dataset filtered by the mathematical model is used to train the XGBoost model, enabling the XGBoost model to effectively identify abnormal hoists. Improvements were observed in the performance of the XGBoost model as utilized in this paper. Finally, experiments were conducted at several stations. The overall false positive rate did not exceed 0.7% and no false negatives occurred in the experiments. The experimental results demonstrated the excellent performance of the proposed approach, which can reduce the costs and improve the accuracy of detection in container hoisting. In a public health emergency, residents urgently require a large number of rescue materials for treatment or protection. These rescue materials are usually located far from the emergency area. The government must organize rescue materials transportation by selecting suitable transport modes. Thus, we propose a material allocation model for public health emergencies under a multimodal transportation network to determine the best rescue material supply route. In this model, we set the demand priorities according to the emergency degrees to decide the transportation sequence. Meanwhile, we introduce the psychological pain cost brought by the rescue material shortage into the proposed model to trade off the priority and fairness of demand. Having compared it to the research literature, this is the first study that considers multiple categories of materials, absolute pain costs, relative pain costs and demand priority under multimodal transportation. The research problem is formulated into an integer programming model, and we develop a modified genetic algorithm to solve it. A set of numerical examples are conducted to test the performance of the proposed algorithm, and to investigate features and applications of the proposed model. The results indicate that the modified genetic algorithm performs better in the calculation examples at different scales. For small-scale instances, the algorithm produces consistent results with Gurobi. As the instance size increases, Gurobi fails to find the optimal solution within 1800 s, while this algorithm is able to find the optimal solution within an acceptable time frame. Additionally, when dealing with large-scale instances, the algorithm exhibits a significant advantage in terms of runtime. Sensitivity analysis of key factors indicate that (1) Adjusting the relative pain cost coefficient can make the best trade-off between fairness, economy and timeliness; (2) Compared with a single mode of transport, multimodal transport can reduce the psychological pain cost and the logistics cost; (3) Improving the loading and unloading capacity of nodes can reduce the delivery time of materials and the psychological pain cost of residents, but the influence of other factors and cost-effectiveness need to be considered.
